The American Revolution was a time of great change. The colonists, who had been ruled by a king, were now governed by a new form of government. This new form of government was called a democracy. It had many people who would decide what happened to the country and they would make their decisions based on what they thought was best for the country.

In the Declaration of Independence it states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Why did they say that? The reason is because they felt that the King had given them rights that weren't theirs to give. They were born into a world where there were laws against things like being able to own land, being able to have children without being married, being able to worship freely and not be punished for it. In other words—they felt as if their God-given rights as human beings had been taken from them.

In this way, they felt as if they had been robbed of something very important. They wanted those rights back. If you think about it, those rights were very important and valuable and not something that anyone would take away from another person without that person's permission.
